Facebook Archives | Pumpkin

I didn’t blog throughout my pregnancy with Pumpkin, or during her newborn and baby years. I did, however, post on Facebook regularly, and the new function that allows you to download all of your information has made it very easy to find all of the old posts I made. This is a compilation of relevant or special posts. The first post was made on January 12th 2009, the day after the positive pregnancy test for my pregnancy with Pumpkin, and is kept current.

…just….happy. Very happy.
January 12, 2009

…feeling nesty and homey today.
January 28, 2009

…have a secret to share.
March 5, 2009

…have disappearing ankles…
March 30, 2009

It feels amazing to get into yoga pants at the end of a long day. The time to buy maternity pants is near…
April 7, 2009

We’re going to have a little girl in September!
April 20, 2009

I feel the baby move on a regular basis now.
April 27, 2009

20 weeks pregnant today…we are halfway done!
April 29, 2009

I justify eating Trader Joe’s peanut butter cups because peanut butter has PROTEIN in it.
May 6, 2009

Going on a “Babymoon” with her hubby at the end of the month, to the Proximity Hotel in Greensboro…for you eco-nerds out there, check it out!
June 4, 2009

I think my little girl is a wee piglet…whenever I eat something, she starts squirming around like crazy!
June 5, 2009

Craving wasabi.
June 23, 2009

Need to eat some Mexican food NOW, or may perish.
July 10, 2009

Starting to realize how much I’m going to miss my little passenger once she is born. Does that sound silly?
July 20, 2009

I watched “A Baby Story” this morning on TLC and was mildly appalled at the number of baby and childbirth cliches that they were able to fit into just a 30 minute show…egads! “Reality TV”, my butt.
July 22, 2009

The baby was really quiet last night, which kind of worried me, but now today she is wiggling up a storm, and using my innards like one of those blowup jumpy things for kids at fairs and carnivals!
July 24, 2009

If nesting were an Olympic sport, I would win gold medals.
July 26, 2009

Another open question to any mommies willing to answer…how did you labor? Drug free, with narcotics, an epidural, or something else entirely? I’m planning on TRYING to go drug-free.
August 7, 2009

Thai food toniiiiiight!
August 9, 2009

So, Thai for dinner wasn’t the best idea before our Labor and Delivery class tonight. An overfull belly and lots of maneuvering, bending, and deep breathing are not a good combo.
August 9, 2009

Early bedtime with a great book, a warm hubby, and three cuddly, freshly bathed pooches. Bliss! ❤
August 10, 2009

The baby wants some FRIED CHICKEN!
August 14, 2009

I’ve been nesting for the last two months! The closets and cupboards in my house are now more organized than they were even after we moved in. At this point I’m just getting all of her clothes, blankies, and linens washed up and all of the shower gifts assembled and put in their places.
August 14, 2009

34 days until official due-date…ohmygoodness. It feels like the Captain and I just peeked around the corner of our little downstairs bathroom doorway to see the positive pregnancy test sitting on the sink after that three-minute wait! I can’t believe how fast it has gone. They told me 37 weeks was term, so it could actually be as little as two weeks from now!
August 14, 2009

Our little girl has been here with us all along, we just can’t actually SEE her yet. Sometime in the next month, we will get to see her face. I can’t believe it!
August 18, 2009

We have a few names picked out, but we want to wait to see her face…she is going to tell US what her name is!
August 20, 2009

I don’t recommend seeing District 9 if you are in your ninth month of pregnancy. Errrrp.
August 23, 2009

3:00 am and can’t sleep. Is the discomfort and sleeplessness of late pregnancy your body’s way of getting you ready for the inevitable sleepless nights after the baby comes?
August 31, 2009

Hello, September! Mid-70s and a breeze with the clear Southern sunshine…it doesn’t get any better than this. ❤
September 1, 2009

Ghirardelli dark chocolate brownies…closest thing to made from scratch. YUM!
September 3, 2009

Really nice day with family, then some evening pool time. I’m a total noodle right now!
September 5, 2009

Found out today that some of her students have bets on when the baby will arrive…apparently one of the guys has $20 riding on tomorrow. Will the baby disappoint him? Tune in on Wednesday!
September 8, 2009

Three years ago today, I married my best friend. Happy wedding anniversary, my love. Our gift to each other will be arriving any day now.
September 9, 2009

Jersey Mike’s philly steak sub with mayo, tomato and banana peppers…food bliss!
September 10, 2009

I’ve held off on Mountain Dew for almost nine months, and I’m having one today. It is like a fiesta in my mouth!
September 11, 2009

The hospital has WiFi…would it be lame and/or creepy and/or gross if Keith and I make updates on Facebook on baby day?
September 11, 2009

I totally don’t feel like she is coming this week.
September 14, 2009

No sign of her yet. She is already disobeying!
September 18, 2009

Too bad that massive amounts of chocolate don’t induce labor…
September 18, 2009

I HOPE it is any day now! At this rate, she could be an October baby. I hope she doesn’t make us wait that long…
September 22, 2009

Still no baby. Met someone yesterday that was two weeks overdue before being induced. At that rate, she’d be an October baby like her mommy and grandma. Dear baby girl, please don’t make us wait that long. Love, Mommy.
September 22, 2009

Induction tomorrow starting at 5:00 pm…they tell us our little girl is a chunker! Estimated 9.6 pounds…we can’t wait! Love to all! ❤
September 23, 2009

We are going to be doing updates via Facebook if we can…I hope people don’t mind maybe finding things out first this way!

We have it narrowed down to a handful of names, though a new one entered the pool today…so it is anyone’s guess.
September 23, 2009

Water broke in the middle of the night. We’re in the hospital now!
September 24, 2009 at 6:46 am

The Captain: It’s time to get down to business.
September 24, 2009 at 5:33 pm

The Pumpkin arrived yesterday at 7:32 pm after only 50 minutes of pushing! She is 8 pounds 14 ounces and almost 21 inches long. She is a little bundle of perfection. We are in love.
September 25, 2009

The Pumpkin arrived at 7:32 pm on Thursday, September 24th! She weighed 8 pounds and 14 ounces, and measured in at 20 and 3/4 inches long. She is incredibly strong, bright-eyed, and positively beautiful, with a head full of silky dark hair. She looks just like her daddy…
September 27, 2009

Listening to my husband singing the Beastie Boys’ “No Sleep Till’ Brooklyn” to our newborn daughter…
October 2, 2009

I’d commit a variety of illegal acts to have a Cassano’s pizza right now. And some old fashioned cream pie from The Spot, please.
October 4, 2009

Pumpkin’s grandmama is here to watch her, I’m in pre-pregnancy jeans, and we’re going out for some SUSHI! Life is good.
October 6, 2009

Eye doctor appointment today, baby with me. Cranky as soon as we arrived, so I went out and nursed her in the back of the Pilot (thank goodness for tinted windows and a rainy day) then changed her on the floor of the waiting room inside. Good thing I was super early…nothing is easy any more with an infant thrown into the mix, is it? I’m loving it.
October 14, 2009

I wonder if Pumpkin minds my gross coffee breath while I cuddle and sing to her in the mornings.
October 15, 2009

Has gotten six-hour stretches of sleep for the last two days…my husband is the BEST!
October 18, 2009

I’m a mess today…I cried while packing away my maternity clothes, and then bawled while singing Disney songs to Pumpkin!
October 20, 2009

Pumpkin is one month old today! Everyone was right…it IS going by fast.
October 22, 2009

Really rough night last night. As if its not hard enough to get sleep right now, over the last few days, one of our dogs has gotten in the habit of waking us up throughout the night, whining and crying for water, to go out, and goodness knows what else. I wonder if she is just starting to feel insecure. Its already getting very old, and we are already out of patience.
October 28, 2009

Pumpkin’s one month checkup today. The pediatrician is gaga over her. And she’s in the 92nd percentile for height. Is anyone surprised? =P
October 28, 2009

My babyhawk came this evening! I ended up getting it instead of the moby wrap. Thanks Heather for the recommendation…I haven’t even used it yet and I love it already.
October 28, 2009

Ever have one of those days where you were so busy that when evening rolls around, you can’t remember a single thing about the first half of your day?
November 2, 2009

No better smell in the world than sweet, warm baby girl in the mornings.
November 3, 2009

Baby is sleeping…I should be doing housework to take advantage of it, but what am I doing instead? Facebook and online forums. I’m hopeless. I haven’t even eaten lunch!
November 3, 2009

Pumpkin is starting to try out smiling…its got to be just a matter of days before she is really lighting up the room! ❤
November 6, 2009

Officially smiling!!
November 9, 2009

Waiting for Donatos and settling in for an evening of couch-cuddling and catching up on DVRed shows from this past week. Is it crazy that this is now my ideal Saturday night?
November 14, 2009

I’m listening to my daughter rip some pretty righteous toots in her swing next to me, grunting like a wee piglet. Cute, gross….or BOTH? I vote both!
November 16, 2009

A gorgeous fall day, a sweet baby girl, and a darling husband to hike with…what more could a girl want?
November 21, 2009

My two-month old daughter already has the ability to make me laugh so hard and for so long that I had tears in my eyes and my tummy still hurts! I am so charmed by her.
December 1, 2009

Moms who nurse/nursed – is it common to get regularly clocked in the face by a tiny sharp-fingernailed flailing fist? Or is my daughter just an aggressive little barracuda? Ha!
December 9, 2009

Just found a dried baby booger on my neck…been out running errands literally all day. I wonder how long it has been there.
December 17, 2009

What a beautiful, amazing year 2009 was. Happy 2010 to all of my friends…I hope there are glorious things in store for all of you!
December 31, 2009

2010

Jump to 2009 | Jump to 2011 | Jump to 2012 | Jump to 2013

Spent the morning drinking coffee and watching Season One of 30 Rock in pajamas. Husband is now starting the first batch of beer with our home-brew kit that we got for Christmas. Baby is dozing in her swing. Dogs are sweetly napping as close to the fireplace as they can without their fur catching fire. So far, a lovely, lazy New Years day!
January 1, 2010

Got an email reminder from the Vet for one of our dogs’ annual shots…one of the reminders was for fecal flotation, which is a parasite indicator. I forwarded the email to The Captain, and his reply to me was, “tell them that her feces floats and that we don’t need that test”. Is there any doubt why I married this man? (Ok, also not Pumpkin related, but it was too funny not to preserve.)
January 5, 2010

A Baby Story came on while I was eating lunch today…I felt the biological clock ticking again! I’m ready for round two.
January 7, 2010

Avatar and a ton of sushi for lunch yesterday…was a good Saturday. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Avatar! This morning we baked bread and have homemade butternut squash lasagna in the oven. The house smells amazing. Happy weekend, all.
January 10, 2010

First day back to classes today! Looking forward to a semester where I don’t have to obsess about how my classes are going to get covered in order to have my baby. Spring semester always flies by, too…before I know it, it will be May and I will be starting my first summer off with my baby girl.
January 12, 2010

Moms: your thoughts on cloth diapers? Keith and I considered them but quickly dismissed them after researching it before Pumpkin was born. The diaper services seem like unnecessary hassle. But doing more research on the home-laundered ones lately makes them look more appealing…some of the brands look really nice!
January 12, 2010

Pumpkin has discovered squealing. It is adorable now, but I’m dreading the day it turns into screaming. Also got most of her three month clothes packed away. I can’t believe my 16-week old daughter is wearing six month sizes!
January 13, 2010

Pumpkin just had The Captain by a handful of his hair, and was kneeing him in the face. She is a brawler already!
January 13, 2010

My husband is singing “pants on the ground” as he changes Pumpkin’s diaper on the floor. Pumpkin responded with an enormous bit of gas. A critic, already!
January 16, 2010

My little boo is getting her first cold…I always read that babies got their first around 3-4 months, and it usually was related to starting Daycare. I hoped that she would escape it since she only goes two days a week. She has a stuffy nose, but no fever and she is still a little peach…no crankiness. Wish I could relieve her congestion.
January 18, 2010

I think my least favorite thing about Pumpkin going to daycare is that she smells so strongly of other women’s perfumes when she comes home. It is all over her and her clothes. Ugh.
January 25, 2010

Pumpkin truly laughed for the first time yesterday, a belly-shaking laugh with little squeals tossed in for good measure. We were sitting on the couch with the two dogs, and she was just so tickled by them. They were just looking at her, and she was having a ball! They entertained her for about five minutes. The Captain and I were laughing so hard along with her.
February 1, 2010

Pumpkin is only four months old, and her hair is so long in the back that it extends about an inch and a half past the collar of her shirts! Its a baby mullet!
February 1, 2010

Is there a brand of baby socks that exist that actually STAY ON baby feet? Sheesh.
February 3, 2010

The Captain found Pumpkin on her belly in the crib around 1:00 am last night, and she has rolled over on her own three more times today! February 7, 2010

Friday evening, and it is snowing in the Carolinas…time for a hermit weekend! We have a stocked kitchen, a fireplace, some new movies from Netflix, two sweet puppies to keep us warm, and our darling baby girl to play with…I think we’re set!
February 12, 2010

Pumpkin’s new trick – rolling over in her crib at night, then fussing, grunting, and eventually crying because she can’t get back over on her back, and doesn’t want to stay on her tummy. Repeat this three or four times a night…*yawn*
February 14, 2010

New this month are some of Pumpkin’s nursing habits. She does this adorable thing where she suddenly breaks away from nursing, and stares up into my face with kind of a drunk and dreamy smile on her face, looking me right in the eye. Then she very purposefully resumes nursing. She’ll repeat this every thirty seconds or so!
She also has started touching my face as she nurses…she just closes her eyes and kind of lets her hand and fingers drift gently over my cheeks and mouth and nose. I love it.
February 17, 2010

I have a hickey on my neck…from my daughter. Ha!
February 27, 2010

An afternoon of Spring yard work and an evening snuggling with a baby is good for the soul. Tomorrow, botanical gardens for photography!
March 16, 2010

Pumpkin looks so much like her daddy, but every once in a while, I see a glimmer of myself in her…an expression, the tilt of her eyes or the set of her mouth. Those moments are such treasures.
March 17, 2010

Is there anything more wonderful than the smell of warm, cuddly baby in the morning?
March 20, 2010

My little darling is six months old today…she lights up my world. I love you, Pumpkin!
March 24, 2010

A hike and some geocaching with my family. A good time was had by all, including the resident tick population! Pumpkin just loved riding around on Daddy and Grandpa’s back.
March 28, 2010

Finally started making Pumpkin’s baby food and got her a new comfortable high chair, so we gave it a test drive last night with some mommy-made sweet potatoes.
March 28, 2010

Pumpkin is now on antibiotics for her first ear infection, but she is as sweet and sassy as she usually is…nothing gets our girl down! At the doctor’s yesterday they weighed her in at 18 pounds and measured her at 28 inches long. My little tank!
March 30, 2010

AP moms & dads; where do/did you draw the line about getting up with your kids at night? Pumpkin is still getting us up around 3:00/4:00, and sometimes also around 1:30. We still get up with her and cuddle until she goes back to sleep, or I nurse her or give her a bottle. Wondering when to start weaning her of this, if at all (despite sleep deprivation, I love the quiet closeness with her, will miss it when it is over).
April 2, 2010

I don’t know how we got so lucky…Pumpkin is such a sweetheart. I’m sure the second one will give us a run for our money!
April 4, 2010

“Remember, you are not managing an inconvenience; You are raising a human being” ~ Kittie Frantz
April 4, 2010

I just realized that I have only ever seen Pumpkin suck her left thumb…wonder if this means she is going to be a leftie?
April 5, 2010

Outback for dinner tonight after catching the craving from the reward challenge on this week’s Survivor. Servers of the world…a good tip is ALWAYS guaranteed when you rave about how “gorgeous” the customer’s baby is!
April 17, 2010

Dear Pumpkin, I promise that this apple-blueberry puree is tastier than your foot…give me the chance to prove it to you! Love, Mama.
April 17, 2010

Last regular day of the semester…so ready for summer! This time last year, I was shopping for a maternity swimsuit. Maybe I’ll wear it again this summer, just so I don’t have to suck in? What are YOUR plans this summer? Anything fun?
April 22, 2010

The people at Carter’s who design the baby clothes are marketing geniuses. What mom is going to be able to resist buying the infant girl’s outfit that says “Mommy’s Dream Come True” on it?
April 23, 2010

Pumpkin really loves watching her daddy play Modern Warfare II. I wonder what kind of warping we’re doing to our little girl.
April 24, 2010

Pumpkin is already on sleep n’ play outfit #3 today. She has perfected the “poop up the back” method of soiling her diaper.
April 26, 2010

Pumpkin had some vanilla custard with lunch today, and made little “mmm” sounds as she ate it, and cried when it was gone. I think she may have a sweet tooth!
April 27, 2010

Pumpkin babbles to herself when she plays alone, and occasionally she will WHISPER the babble-talk to herself or what she is playing with. It is the most darling thing…I hope I can catch it on video someday! What cute things did your kids do when they started discovering their voices?
April 28, 2010

I absolutely cannot keep Pumpkin’s hands out of her nethers during diaper changes. Have other parents experienced this, or is my daughter just weird?
May 4, 2010

Pumpkin’s new trick; having a mouthfull of baby food, then resolutely plunking her thumb into her mouth, all the way up to the knuckle. Adorable? Yes. Messy? Yes, too.
May 10, 2010

Pumpkin really is her daddy’s girl…I have a whole suite of toys for her to play with on the floor, and she ignore them all to nom on a USB cable.
May 10, 2010

“You look so pretty today!” repeated twice in a row by one’s husband while meeting him for lunch initially brings pleasure, but what follows is the inevitable question to oneself…why did there seem to be SURPRISE in his voice, and how do I look MOST of the time?
May 13, 2010

Operation baby-proof is underway! Pumpkin is officially fully mobile, and getting her hands on anything she can reach, including photo frames, daddy’s books, dog toys, and scented pinecones. She’s still slow right now, but I give her a week before she is crawling fast!
May 17, 2010

Pumpkin is nomming on a teething biscuit, and it is all slimy now. She keeps taking it out of her mouth and saying, “oh, oh, ah” while looking at it appraisingly and smacking her lips, then returning it to her mouth.
May 20, 2010

This morning, I bought some 18M summer clothes for my EIGHT MONTH OLD.
May 26, 2010

Two days after she turns eight months old, my little girl is pulling herself to standing position on any furniture she can. I seem to remember some moms telling me they had little ones walking by nine months…yikes!
May 26, 2010

Cleaned out the old diaper bag this morning to put stuff in our new one…found two Corona beer bottle caps in one of the outside pockets. Ha!
June 5, 2010

Up from 12:30 to 3:30 last night with a wide-awake and cheerful baby who apparently missed the memo from her pediatrician that she had a viral infection and possible ear infection beginning. I swear my little girl is the most chipper sick person I’ve ever met! *yawn*
June 5, 2010

The Captain and I successfully used cloth diapers on the baby all weekend, even while we were out! Hooray!
June 14, 2010

Got off work early today and picked Pumpkin up from daycare early too, because I missed her and wanted to spend time with her. The little turkey has been napping since we got home. Ha.
June 14, 2010

I love the idea of cloth diapering, and really think it is great that there are so many independently-ran baby boutiques online that specialize in them, but some of the names are just asinine. “Cutiepoops”…seriously???
June 15, 2010

The Captain is in charge of the baby tonight while I get caught up on photoediting and other online business. He is sitting on the floor of the office, dragging her around in a flat plastic storage container, and she is loving it.
June 16, 2010

My husband is nesting, cleaning out his filing drawers in the office, and doing basic mancave maintenance. This is beyond bizarre. I wonder if he is pregnant?
June 19, 2010

Happy first father’s day to my perfect match, the partner of my dreams, and the gentlest, funniest, most natural daddy I know. How fortunate Pumpkin and I are that we get to share our lives with you.
June 20, 2010

Monday night Pumpkin was up from 2:30-4:30, and last night she was up NON-STOP from 12:30 to 4:30. I’m completely useless today. And I think I’m ready for baby #2…ha.
June 23, 2010

Four consecutive sleepless nights makes sense when your baby is diagnosed with the croup…what an ugly name for an ugly thing! Pumpkin is dosed up with the steroid the pede prescribed her (dubiously and reluctantly given by yours truly, but I’m willing to try anything to get her – and us! – a good night’s rest). Happy Friday! Ha.
June 25, 2010

Moms and dads with multiple kiddos; how far apart are they, and do you like the split? Do you wish they were closer in age, or farther apart? Are there any downsides to having two babes under the age of two at the same time? What are the benefits that you perceive?
June 26, 2010

The Captain knows I’m feeling yucky today…as he is cooking his special recipe shrimp carbonara, he turns to me and says, “This is my ‘I love you’ meal.” Love him.
July 6, 2010

Practically overnight, my daughter seems to have developed separation anxiety. She’s wailing in her crib within two hours of going to bed, then when we bring her to bed with us, she fusses, wiggles, and babbles throughout the night. She only takes 15 minute naps, and when she wakes up from them, she wails. And she doesn’t seem to be tired during the day! What gives?!
July 12, 2010

Drinking a Warsteiner, hubby is grilling chicken to have with baked sweet potatoes, had an outstanding day out with my little boo, the rain is on the way…bliss.
July 13, 2010

My daughter appears to be a punk lover…I had her in her playard while I cleaned the kitchen, and the Ramones came on the Sirius, so I danced into the living room and she was jamming, bouncing up and down and grinning from ear-to-ear. I picked her up and we danced. She snorted and grinned and giggled the whole time. Awesome.
July 14, 2010

Pumpkin is reclining back in her highchair for her afternoon snack, and she just raised one of her legs all the way up and ripped out a particularly resonant fart. Now she’s making little “yeh, yeh, yeh” grunting noises and grinning. Thats my girl.
July 14, 2010

Just learned the hard way that giving my daughter prunes and corn in the same 24-hour period is a really, really bad idea. Phew.
July 20, 2010

My brilliant and beautiful baby girl is ten months old today. I can’t believe we are in double digits.
July 24, 2010

Pumpkin is so obsessed with her YoBaby Yogurt that she is PUSHING the spoon with her sweet potatoes out of her face and reaching for the unopened container of yogurt on the table next to us. I had to hide it behind the laptop monitor so she would finish her dinner. She knows exactly what it is when I get it out of the fridge!
July 29, 2010

We have an infant Crankasarus rex on our hands today!
July 31, 2010

There is no better smell in the world than my daughter’s neck, just behind her ears.
August 2, 2010

The Captain took the babe to daycare today so I could do some work. I stopped by to drop off a check, so of course I popped in to see Pumpkin. Usually, she has no time for mommy when there are new people around, especially other kids. But today she REALLY wanted to be picked up and cuddled, and when I put her down to leave, she started WAILING. Worst thing ever. I made it about ten minutes in the car before I cried.
August 4, 2010

Pumpkin has fallen into a very regular routine of falling asleep at 8:00 pm, waking up around 11:00 pm, then again around 4:00 am. She is usually up for at least 30 minutes each time, and absolutely will not go back to sleep until she nurses or has a bottle. She is usually awake for the day around 6:30 am. This has been happening since late June. Someone tell me this is just a 10-month old thing…
August 5, 2010

I was just sitting on the floor with Pumpkin in her room, reading “Ten Tiny Fairies” to her for the millionth time, and I realized…there is nowhere in the world I would rather be. I’m going to miss the private time with my little girl when more babes come along.
August 11, 2010

About an hour ago, Pumpkin took her first steps! Three days shy of 11 months old. Her first steps were two to get to daddy, then two to get back to mommy, then subsequent steps were back and forth between us to get to the X-Box controller! ❤
August 21, 2010

I put new sheets on the bed last night, and by 1:00 am, Pumpkin’s diaper had leaked and soaked the bed between Keith and I. Then this morning I woke up to dog pee on the hardwood floors, and five minutes after Claire ate, she barfed up three huuuuge piles of dog food in the kitchen. All before 7:00 am. One of THOSE days…
August 22, 2010

Happy 11 months to my luminous little girl! Only one more month and we have a one-year-old. Madness! I miss her today…it is only day two of being back to work full-time, and I am already totally over being away from her. I’ve already had enough!
August 24, 2010

The Captain and I are both feeling particularly self-congratulatory about what a gorgeous little girl we made.
September 6, 2010

My husband came to me tonight and asked me to show him how to wash Pumpkin’s cloth diapers. I have also received five shoulder massages tonight. Love this man.
September 7, 2010

Pumpkin is officially walking, slowly, but confidently. She is also waving at everything in sight and saying “Hieee” in her sweet voice; from people, to dogs, to inanimate objects. It broke my heart the other day at the grocery…she would wave and say “Hi” to people as they walked away from her. It was SO darling. I wanted them to come and say hi back to my baby girl!
September 10, 2010

Pumpkin insists on taking two of her bath toys with her after her bath, one for each hand while she is getting her pajamas on and the other parts of her nighttime ritual.
September 12, 2010

Claire is asleep in the middle of the room, and every five minutes she is squeaking off farts that sound like a really loudly buzzing bee. I wonder what she got into in the woods that has her gastrointestinal system so chatty today. (Not baby! Dog!)
September 17, 2010

Today was Pumpkin’s due date last year. We had to wait one week longer than we’d originally expected, but it was worth every single moment of aching hips, sleepless nights, and kicks in the ribs during that last seven days.
September 17, 2010

We went to three farms on Sunday as part of the second annual Know Your Farms tour. We went to an alpaca farm, a grass-fed cattle farm, and a more touristy place called the Aw Shucks corn maze. Pumpkin had a blast, and so did we.
September 20, 2010

What is it about seeing a pregnant woman that makes me feel a surge of affection for her, even if she is a complete stranger?
September 21, 2010

One day shy of her 1st b-day, Pumpkin had her first tantrum. She was fed, dry, with no fever, but she was screaming and thrashing around when we tried to hold her. We were so puzzled! She was on my lap when I was trying to eat dinner, and I gave her some turkey out of my taco after I noticed her glancing at it. She calmed down instantly. Little turd was throwing a terrible fit because she wanted some of OUR food!
September 23, 2010

A forecasted high of 95 is going to ruin the plans for our trip to the zoo today for Pumpkin’s first birthday. I’m so bummed. Weather channel says the temps are “near record highs”. Where is my fall weather?
September 25, 2010

Pumpkin’s one year wellbaby today…she’s still in the 95th for height at 31.75 inches tall, and the 75th for weight, at 22 pounds. My wee Amazon! ❤
September 27, 2010

It is 7:25 and my daughter is STILL asleep. She was only up once last night from about 3:45 to 4:15. Why can’t she do this on the weekends?!
September 28, 2010

Pumpkin is drinking whole milk now, but we are stumbling trying to wean her from the bottle. How did you wean your little one from the bottle?
October 1, 2010

“I don’t need no one to tell me about heaven…look at my daughter, and I believe.”
October 1, 2010

The Captain just taught Pumpkin to hold a piece of food up to her mouth and say “nom nom nom nom nom”.
October 2, 2010

“I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that
you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them
when they’re right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust (…) yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things
can fall together.” Attributed to Marilyn Monroe. (This wasn’t related to Pumpkin, but I want to save it for personal, private reasons.)
October 10, 2010

Pumpkin just completely ignored the babydoll I was trying to entice her with, and reached very deliberately for my Yuengling.
October 11, 2010

I’ve officially crossed over into a whole new level of motherhood…publicly displaying ambiguous “art” of my daughter’s, in my office. Next venue, the refrigerator!
October 20, 2010

My little boo is cutting three molars at once. Seems to bother her the most at night…anticipating another rough evening tonight!
November 7, 2010

We learned two things tonight. One, that Pumpkin can throw up a surprising quantity of food without seeming to be phased one bit (I still cry like a baby when I throw up; but not my baby girl!) and two, our dogs are more than happy to dive right in to help clean up the resulting mess by chowing down on baby barf.
November 10, 2010

It is 6:32 pm and The Captain just put Pumpkin to bed, flawlessly. I’m speechless! Doing some photo editing, then couch cuddles with coffee and a movie.
November 13, 2010

Every once in a while, Pumpkin will throw a tantrum over something really trivial, and fall to the ground, crying like we had just ruined her life. She is so drama, I can’t help but laugh at her as I also try to console her…is this going to scar her for life? Haha.
November 14, 2010

Pumpkin loves daycare so much now that she doesn’t even glance away from her playmates as I leave. I’m trying to convince myself this is better than the crying!
November 17, 2010

Pumpkin subsists on mainly string cheese, blueberry bagels, Cheerios and the occasional Eggo waffle and carrots, as well as applesauce, yogurt, and grits, which we still spoon-feed her. She doesn’t seem to like sweet potatoes and butternut squash any more. She is a carb and dairy fiend, but we need to get her more veggies and fruits!
November 18, 2010

Got Pumpkin ready for daycare…just put my 14 month old Amazon beauty into 24 month leggings and an 18 month top.
November 19, 2010

I bought Pumpkin a winter hat and mittens set just for the mittens; they don’t seem to sell baby gloves alone, and she already has several hats. I just washed her laundry, and one of the mittens is already missing. She hasn’t even worn them yet. Sigh.
November 19, 2010

“Beep bay, beezle-beezle”, Pumpkin says. I think that translates to, “Happy Saturday, everyone!”
November 20, 2010

“Zee bweea bwoms”, says Pumpkin.
November 21, 2010

Number of times this week Pumpkin has pooped in the tub during her nighttime bath – twice.
November 26, 2010

Toddler dressing should be an Olympic sport.
November 30, 2010

My friends, if you have children and/or multiple pets, I do NOT recommend purchasing a blacklight in order to find hidden carpet stains. You will be appalled. Just sayin’.
December 3, 2010

Facebooking with my morning coffee and Pumpkin in the highchair beside me, I opened up a photo of a friend’s baby, and she started pointing at the screen saying, “Bay-bye, beebawbaw, beebaw, bee-bay”…pretty much every adorable mispronunciation of “baby” you could imagine. Rapid fire, and loud! I think she is a fan of wee ones!
December 5, 2010

Was walking well behind The Captain and Pumpkin at Costco and overheard a lady telling her husband how “sweet and so angelic” Pumpkin was…ha! If she only knew.
December 12, 2010

Tonight, I successfully changed Pumpkin while she stood up in a restaurant bathroom that didn’t have a changing table. I feel like I’ve moved on to the next level of motherhood.
December 12, 2010

Pumpkin had her first-ever Cassano’s pizza tonight. She loved it.
December 21, 2010

Stuck in traffic with a constipated baby grunting like a piglet in the back seat.
December 26, 2010

My little girl is pretty much the awesomest thing ever, but I could REALLY do without the pooping in the tub.

Just when I thought I couldn’t possibly love my husband more, he went and washed a particularly foul load of cloth diapers tonight. Without prompting. What a man.
January 25, 2011

Watching my daughter sit on my husband’s lap at his computer desk, rolling gaming dice.
January 29, 2011

Pumpkin has had a headcold the last few days, and has been feeling really poorly. This morning, The Captain got up with her, and I came into her room about a minute later to take her from him, like I usually do in the mornings. This morning when I tried to take her out of The Captain’s arms, Pumpkin slapped me in the neck and said, “No!” and put her arms around him.
February 2, 2011

Turned away long enough to grab her toothbrush, heard a crash, and saw Pumpkin face down in the empty tub. She climbed over the side. Yikes! She is also tall enough to grasp door handles!
February 10, 2011

The Captain bought Pumpkin her first babydoll today. She loves it…she usually loses interest in toys after about two minutes, but she kept it with her most of the day. My favorite thing about it is that it smells like a Cabbage Patch Doll. I could sniff it’s head for hours!
February 12, 2011

7:00 am and Pumpkin is still asleep. Why can’t she do this on the weekends?
February 8, 2011

Pumpkin is trying to say “spaghetti”…it sounds like “kaykee”. Love!!!
February 16, 2011

Pumpkin demanded some of my curried red lentil soup for lunch. She devoured it, but the girl won’t touch chicken nuggets. What is that about?
February 20, 2011

I’m sorting laundry on my bed, and Pumpkin is sitting here with me, individually trying each of my underwear on her head.
February 24, 2011

Coffee in bed, courtesy of my awesome hubs. Pumpkin still asleep beside me, sawing logs. Poor little sicky. TGIF
February 25, 2011

Pumpkin is really big on practicing her anatomy words right now…tonight she lifted up the Captain’s shirt, pointed to his nipple, and gleefully exclaimed, “Boobies!”
February 28, 2011

Pumpkin loves to pick up the little remote we have for the bedroom TV and pretend to talk on it like it is a cellphone. This morning, she picked it up and started saying “hi, hi, hi” and waving, so I got my phone and pretended to talk to her from across the room. She carried on a whole conversation with me…I couldn’t understand her language, but it was adorable!
March 3, 2011

Girl’s day out with my little best friend…pancakes at Cracker Barrel, then shopping with daddy’s money. Score.
March 5, 2011

Starting in August I’ll be trying my hand at being a SAHM, at least until January! I’m really excited about it. Just makes me sad when great jobs in my field open up close to home and I’m not in a position to even think about applying.
March 8, 2011

“I’m going to teach my daughter to love herself and to feel good about everything she’s able to achieve. I want her to celebrate all of life’s little victories, and to celebrate other women’s as well. I want her to be comfortable enough in her own skin to not be threatened by another woman’s confidence.” – The Feminist Breeder
March 8, 2011

Pumpkin just went pee in the potty!!!!!!!
March 10, 2011

We were pretty self-congratulatory about never giving Pumpkin a pacifier, and therefore never having to wean her from it, but we have a bigger issue now. She is almost 18 months old and still NEEDS her nighttime milk in a bottle. She also wakes up twice a night and NEEDS that bottle. When did your babes no longer need a bottle?
March 14, 2011

The little turkey wants the bottle AND the cuddling AND a book, and we give it to her. I think this weekend we’ll try going cold turkey on the bottle. It is so hard though, when she asks for it by name. She says, “Baw?” is her sweet little voice, and I’m useless.
March 15, 2011

After weeks of calling me “maymie”, Pumpkin is finally calling me “mommy”, and it melts me. I am so crazy about her.
March 21, 2011

Miss Pumpkin pooped in the potty this morning and today we bought her a toddler bed. This is happening way too quickly for me.
April 9, 2011

Around March or so, I started buying summer clothes for Pumpkin in 18 month and 24 month sizes…looks like my Amazon of a little girl isn’t going to get to wear most of it. She’s comfortably wearing 2T summer stuff at 19 months!
April 23, 2011

This morning Pumpkin and I did a time-honored tradition and hunted for cicada nymph exoskeletons in the woods. She was taking them from my hands without fear, and was very entertained when I stuck them to her shirt, like my dad used to do with us! My little nature girl.
April 27, 2011

“A daughter is a mother’s gender partner, her closest ally in the family confederacy, an extension of her self. And mothers are their daughters’ role model, their biological and emotional road map, the arbiter of all their relationships.” – Victoria Secunda { I love you, mom! Happy Mother’s day! }
May 4, 2011

My daughter is a crazy fool for Raisin Bran. She’s on her second bowl!
May 5, 2011

It is 9:43 am and Pumpkin is still asleep. WHAT?
May 6, 2011

Highlight of my day – driving past Victoria’s Secret store window, Pumpkin pointing to the model in the window and exclaiming, “Mommy!” Ridiculous.
May 7, 2011

My daughter has become a sleeping champ. She goes down like a dream around 8:00 at night, wakes up once in the night for some water and a diaper change (which she wouldn’t need if she didn’t insist on drinking 12 ounces of water to fall asleep), then sleeps again until late in the morning. It is 8:03 and she is still asleep. I hope this lasts!Mary 12, 2011

Pumpkin won’t really attempt to say her own name…but when she does, it comes out as either “Yee” or “YeeYee”.
May 14, 2011

Usually, Pumpkin reserves the word “more” for food…but just a second ago, I asked her for a kiss, and she gave me one…when I moved away, she said “more?” and gave me another. I have little cartoon hearts dancing around my head now.
May 22, 2011

Just bought Pumpkin her first Cabbage Patch kid…she immediately started pretending to feed it with a bottle. Not sure who is more excited, her or I!
May 30, 2011

Pumpkin is finally saying “milk”, and it comes out as “meel” in her sweet, squeaky little voice. To top it off, she usually makes the sign for it at the same time. Cute overload! What’s the cutest thing your little one says?
June 1, 2011

8:00 bedtime is not easy when the little girl you’re trying to put down didn’t wake up from a nap until 5:00…
June 5, 2011

First day in two whole weeks that I have to be away from my little girl. =(
June 6, 2011

I can hear my little mockingbird in her room, chattering away at some of her toys…she is supposed to be down for bed. Resisting the urge to go in there and soak up the sweetness.
June 6, 2011

I guess I should get Pumpkin’s baby book put together since the new baby will be here in about two months…
June 7, 2011

Pumpkin was tossing her raisins around, and I told her they were supposed to go in her belly. So, she promptly raised up her shirt, and put them “in” her belly.
June 9, 2011

The wee one has some kind of mysterious stomach bug…throwing up after meals, but no fever. And she’s so tired. I hate feeling so helpless. =(
June 11, 2011

Pumpkin felt the baby move today! We were laying in bed and she put her hand on my belly, and her little sister thumped her good three times in a row. She looked at me all surprised, and started giggling. Love it.
June 22, 2011

I love watching Pumpkin with her cousin W… she tries to do everything he does, and it is so cute.
June 26, 2011

It’s official. To date, the cutest thing I’ve ever seen is my daughter standing in front of the mirror with her shirt pulled up, pointing to her bellybutton, giggling, “Me beebutt, me beebutt” over and over in her husky little voice.
July 1, 2011

Tonight in our yard, Pumpkin got to see a baby bunny and a baby bird up close, and she got to harvest a ripe tomato. My little nature girl!
July 3, 2011

Pumpkin was a bit of a monster last night when we went to TCBY. The Captain asked me if we were “those parents” that let their kids act a fool in public and other people talked about behind their backs. Three years ago, we’d have been the judgmental child-free type, but I realized…ANYONE that has had children would understand exactly what we were going through.
July 11, 2011

I’m SO excited for the baby girl to get here, but I’m starting to get a little sad that in about a month, we’re going to have to split our time with Pumpkin. How do you prepare your heart to make room for another little one?
July 17, 2011

95 degrees and an hour at the pool = guaranteed toddler nap. I hardly know what to do with myself!

Ok, lets be honest. I’m going to clean. If I were any nesty-er, I’d have feathers.
July 20, 2011

Opted for Fraggle Rock on the couch with my girl instead of errands in the 100-degree heat. Feels good to relax.
July 22, 2011

My little angel is being very challenging today. Refusing a nap, being volatile. I’m so worried that I’m going to go into labor after a day like this, and my last day alone with her will have been spent being frustrated with her.
July 29, 2011

The Captain showed Pumpkin his miniatures for the first time today, and she is absolutely obsessed. When he put them away, she said, “bye-bye, men!” So cute…our little nerd girl. ♥
July 30, 2011

My little girl is my heart and soul, but man, do I love it when she naps and gives me an afternoon break! Mama gets to nap too…gleeee!
August 3, 2011

Pumpkin got her first Smartwool socks today…can’t wait to strap on the baby and hike with my girls this Fall.
August 12, 2011

Pumpkin is finally trying to say her name, and she pronounces it “Wibby”. It’s just about the cutest thing ever. How did your little one first say their name?
August 14, 2011

Nana just taught Pumpkin how to eat Bugles off her fingers…milestone!
August 14, 2011

My mom is downstairs vacuuming, and I can hear Pumpkin down there giggling her little butt off. I suppose it is good that she is so easily amused…
August 15, 2011

Pumpkin is REALLY struggling to learn how to say “smurfs”. For a few weeks, it was “hips”, now it is “fumps”. The Captain and I were trying soooo hard not to laugh while she tried.
August 16, 2011

Mommy – “Pumpkin, are you ready to go night-night?” Pumpkin – “Nope!” Pause, followed by huge yawn. Haha.
August 16, 2011

Pumpkin is giggling watching Wipeout…I’m glad my daughter appreciates lowbrow humor and enjoys watching people bust their butts.
September 6, 2011

Overheard from the back seat of the car. Peanut: *blarrrrf* (Big spitup.) Pumpkin, in response: “Milk!”
September 8, 2011

Pumpkin was one of the girls chosen for the Tadpole and Lily model search! She will get to do a really fun photo shoot with six other kiddos at the Cleveland County fair on October 1st. She’s certainly used to being photographed… ♥
September 12, 2011

The Captain: “Pumpkin, did you poop?”
Pumpkin: “nope.”
The Captain: “promise?”
Pumpkin: “maybe”
September 17, 2011

Two years ago today at this time, I was on the way to the hospital to give birth to my luminous little girl. She has a little light around her…everyone that meets her can see it, and it gets brighter every day. I love you, Pumpkin…happy birthday! You are my heart.
September 24, 2011

Pumpkin: “Mah balloons!” (reaches for them)
Me: “Can you say please?”
Pumpkin: “Please.” (pause) “Now.”
September 27, 2011

Pumpkin is at daycare today for the first time this week, so I can run errands. She was excited to go and see her “boys”, and things will be so much easier with just Peanut, but man, I miss her.
September 29, 2011

It’s kind of a rite of passage for kiddos to barf when they get home from their first county fair, isn’t it?
October 1, 2011

Pumpkin is up from her nap, and I’m watching her play with all of her stuffed animals in her bed on the video monitor. She keeps arranging them in a big pile, then laying down in them, and she’s talking to them, but I can’t tell what she is saying. I feel like such a voyeur, but she is so stinking cute, I don’t want to interrupt her!
October 3, 2011

This morning, we’re visiting Meltdown City by way of the Drama Queen Highway. Can’t wait to go to Naptime Village later this afternoon!
October 10, 2011

Pumpkin is calling The Captain “dad” instead if daddy right now…it makes me giggle.
October 11, 2011

Tonight, Pumpkin is melting down faster than a candy bar in a microwave, and even our angel Peanut is being difficult. This is what we get for trying early bedtime…
October 11, 2011

What part of the toddler brain says, “hey look! Decorative pine cones…those look delicious. nomnomnomnom”?
October 14, 2011

Large baby went down like a dream for her afternoon nap. Small baby isn’t tolerating anything that involves either a.) being put down, and/or b.) stopping eating. Thank goodness for the BabyHawk!
October 17, 2011

Pumpkin is so gross. I just asked her if she’d pooped (knowing perfectly well that she did), and she said “yeah”, then she got a really mad look on her face and said in a confrontational tone, “me KEEP it, mommy.” I swear she waited to do it until I started feeding Peanut so I couldn’t change her right away. So much for easy potty training…
October 19, 2011

I made Pumpkin an English muffin with cheese and garlic and was trying to get her to try it. She did the toddler-head-turn when I tried to get her to take a bite, so I took a bite to show her how yummy it was. She responded “good girl, mommy!” but still refused to eat it. Ha.
October 24, 2011

I made Pumpkin little turkey-dog and cheese skewers for lunch today, and what does she opt to eat…?
The wood on the skewers. Sigh.
October 27, 2011

Pupmkin farting in the tub. “Look! Bubbles!” My little girl has discovered one of her superpowers.
October 27, 2011

Further support toward my candidacy for Mother of the Year – my two year old is eating m&m’s prior to 8:00 am. She peed on the potty, and a promise (read: bribe) is a promise! She was demanding “cawkut” before she even stood up!
November 7, 2011

We’re driving to dinner and the moon is huge in the sky. Pumpkin says “Daddy, look…the moon!” and I told her we were going to try to go get it. She responded, “I get you, moon!” Looooooove this little girl.
November 9, 2011

Pumpkin and I were watching Barney after lunch. At the end, I started singing the “I love you” song along with Barney, and she looked over at me and said, “Stop, stop, stop! Barney singin’.”
November 10, 2011

Nobody can dispute how moms of toddlers are hardcore…I just got a kiss combined with pasta sauce, tootsie roll-infused drool, and a liberal dose of snot. Respect.
November 10, 2011

Pumpkin frequently refers to herself as “good boy”…I wonder if it is because she hears it at daycare a lot? Most of the kids in her class are boys.
November 17, 2011

It is supposed to be nap time, and I just watched Pumpkin on the baby monitor take three containers of Play Dough into her bed with her, and she got under the covers with them. She’s content, and I’m getting to do some photo editing, so I’ll deal with the consequences later.
November 17, 2011

Best exchange EVER with my daughter this morning:

“Pumpkin, what do monkies eat?”
“Nannas!”
“What does Claire Bear (one of our dogs) eat?”
“bones!”
“what does Pumpkin eat?”
(ponders) “chocolate!” (pronounced “cawkut”, of course.)
“What does mommy eat?”
(hesitantly) “dinner?”
“What does Peanut eat?”
(confidently) “BOOBIE!”
I have never said it before…I thought she would say “milk”. I love her little mind.
November 18, 2011

“Pumpkin, what do you want to do today?”
(Pumpkin’s eyes go misty, she tilts her head to the side, smiles dreamily, and whispers…)
“Caaaaaaawkut…”
(Pumpkin-speak for “chocolate”, for those who missed it.)
November 21, 2011

I’d like to spend five minutes alone in a room with whomever taught my two year old to say, “yuck”…
November 21, 2011

About to give up the “please don’t eat the crayons” fight, and just let Pumpkin chow down. Terrible mom?
November 22, 2011

“I’m a tiny clown.” – Pumpkin
November 25, 2011

The second we pulled into the Target parking lot, a little voice in the back seat chimed, “Yaaaaay Target!” That’s my girl.
November 27, 2011

“No, mommy! MY poop! Keeeeeep my poopy!”
Sigh…what kind of weird kid is this proprietary about their dirty diapers?
Oh, right. Mine is.
November 28, 2011

It is currently naptime, and the large child is screaming at me from her room, “MOMMY! MY WATCH TV! NOW!” flavored with incoherent screeches and totally put-on sobs. Give me strength. If it’s really the threes that are truly “terrible”, we’re in for a treat.
November 28, 2011

Pumpkin went to stay the night with her grandma and great aunt, an hour and a half away. I handled it surprisingly well. Peanut and I are at the mall self-medicating with a huge caramel brûlée latte from Starbucks and spending the last of our Children’s Place gift cards.
December 2, 2011

“Pumpkin, did you poopy?”
(matter-of-factly) “No, me farted.”
Ha.
December 8, 2011

Pumpkin says, “Maey Chrissum”, everyone!
December 12, 2011

In the grip of toddler rage because I wouldn’t let her have stickers, Pumpkin went to slap me in the leg and ended up bashing her face on the metal bedpost. I think she is too young to understand the lesson, but it broke my heart. Hope she doesn’t have a massive shiner just in time for the holidays…
December 15, 2011

Pumpkin calls the iPad “piepad”…those of you that know me well know exactly how much this tickles me.
December 24, 2011

Amazing how quickly “forgotten toy at the very bottom of enormous toybox” becomes “favorite toy” once little sister shows the tiniest bit of interest in it…
December 27, 2011

If Pumpkin is being particularly obstinate and I can’t get her attention, I tell her “Look at my eyes” to engage her. I was just playing with Peanut and she was trying unsuccessfully to divert my attention, until she said, “Mommy! Look at my eyes!” Clever girl.
January 4, 2012

Pumpkin pees on the potty before bath time. I turn my back long enough to get the water started and at a good temperature. I turn around just in time to see her lifting the plastic potty bowl up over her head and attempting to pour the pee into the sink. I’m sure you can guess how this story ends.
January 4, 2011

My big girl is uncharacteristically melancholy today. “My want Gwampa. Nana far away. Wyatt far away. My want Gwanny. My want GeGe.” She’s also been really cuddly and actually napped today. When do the two year molars come in?
January 9, 2012

Pumpkin asked for two days to watch the Neverending Story…I woke up this morning to find that The Captain had indulged her. She kept saying “oh goodness!” at the parts with pretty, fantastical scenery. I’m trying to skip the potentially scary parts. This used to be my faaaaaavorite movie. I hope seeing it so early doesn’t warp her.
January 14, 2012

I sure hope Pumpkin got enough sodium for lunch today. Pickles and turkey-dogs…should have her covered.
January 16, 2012

I slept in until 10:00 this morning, and was awakened by a sweet toddler voice saying “mommy, mommy!” on one side of me, and a sweet baby girl and smiling husband on the other. Even Cody jumped into the pile on the bed. It was so, so nice.
January 28, 2012

Pumpkin says “fweep” instead of “sleep”, in her tiny, high-pitched little voice. I’m going to be sad when she starts pronouncing it correctly.
January 28, 2012

Cutest new Pumpkin-ism: “panni-yo” = piano. ♥
January 30, 2012

We watched some of the first Spiderman movie last night, and Pumpkin was very impressed by the upside-down kiss in the rain scene. Today, she’s been making all of her toys kiss, and she’s saying, “they kissing togebba”.
February 1, 2012

Pumpkin brings me an unopened bag of Fritos. “My want these.”
“No baby, not this early.”
(Walking away with the bag, very matter-of-factly) “Let me go ask my dad.”
February 4, 2012

Pumpkin, upon discovering that a marker is dry and won’t color – “The batteries are dead!”
February 10, 2012

Just went outside with Pumpkin to put something in the mail, and we saw a little dead sparrow in the driveway. I let her look at it, and explained to her that he had died. She crouched down to get a better look, and said, “Awww. He not fine.” Sweet little thing!
February 22, 2012

Pumpkin got her first lightsaber today. *sniff*
March 4, 2012

Pumpkin is in the tub. I hear a grunt. I ask, “Pumpkin, are you pooping?” “No” she says, matter of factly, “My having a baby.” Apparently, my two year old just had a home waterbirth with a Belle doll.
March 6, 2012

I just went in to check on Peanut and cover her back up, and was tickled to find that out of all of her stuffed animals and doll babies, she chose to go to bed with her lightsaber. Man, I love that little girl.
March 19, 2012

Pumpkin wanted “juice, Goldfish, and television” (she says television rather than “tv”…ha) when she crawled out of bed this morning. That’s what she got. I’m awaiting the arrival of my mother-of-the-year award any day now.
March 23, 2012

Currently, I’m feeding the baby, and Pumpkin is applying and rubbing lotion into my leg, saying, “you want some more, mom?” and “you ready, mom?” She is so gentle and sweet. This is my favorite game ever.
March 23, 2012

Pumpkin is in the bath, and she was just making up a song about an imaginary person called “Mister Cuddles”. Ha!
March 24, 2012

I’m simultaneously appalled and proud of how dirty Peanut’s bath water was tonight, following an obviously awesome day outside at school.
April 10, 2012

It is definitely official – Pumpkin watches too many British kid’s shows. She just saw a cardboard box of something The Captain got in the mail today, and she exclaimed, “Post!” excitedly when she saw it. Haha.
April 13, 2012

Pumpkin’s profound reflection after seeing a bunch of dead worms on the sidewalk today; “Them not can wiggle any more.”
I love Pumpkinisms.
April 15, 2012

Awesome Pupmkinism of the day…instead of flamingo, she says “fwing-gogo”!
April 18, 2012

Pumpkin says, “My want my own coffee for my throat…it feel me better.” Poor baby has the same crud I’ve got.
April 25, 2012

Pumpkin stayed downstairs with me while I cleaned up from dinner and Keith took Peanut up for her bath. We talked to each other for fifteen minutes, uninterrupted. It was so, so perfect. I love that we can have conversations now…though she usually gets distracted by something after a few minutes. Tonight was major!
April 26, 2012

Mommy’s bedtime stories don’t measure up. The Empress Pumpkin requested a “robot story from daddy” after I told her a lame story about a water fairy that granted wishes.
April 26, 2012

I’m not kidding – the very instant that I felt Peanut fall asleep on me, I heard Pumpkin wake up in her room from her nap. HA! Impossible to get them asleep at the same time.
May 4, 2012

“Pumpkin, where do you want to meet daddy for lunch today?”
Pumpkin, playing with Play-Doh: “My not want to sit by daddy today. My too busy, mama. My making a snake.”
Ha. 🙂
May 8, 2012

Pumpkin is sitting at my feet, coloring in the office while I edit photos. I hear her say, “This smells good…” (big sniffing sound) …”this smells good.”
I look down, and she’s huffing a Sharpie.
Seriously, child?
May 20, 2012

Pumpkin scribbled on my to-do list hhis morning, and I asked her if she left me a note. She told me yes, so I asked her what it said. She said, “Dear, love. Mommy, dear. Dear, love, mom.”
May 22, 2012

“Pumpkin, did you just peepee in the bath water?”
“Yeahhhhh…silly me.”
May 31, 2012

Pumpkin, getting tucked back into bed: “There’s some monsters coming.”
Mommy: “No, there’s no monsters here. They’re afraid of mommy, remember?”
Pumpkin: “You might bust them in their noses.”
June 4, 2012

It delights me that my little girl comes home from daycare with dirt up her nose as well as caked under her fingernails.
June 6, 2012

Pumpkin just watched me take some meds for my headache, and she insisted that she needed some for her ” head oak”.
June 11, 2012

Apparently, Pumpkin told The Captain this morning that he needed to stop sweeping the kitchen floor, because brooms (or the act of sweeping, itself) were “for girls”. What the what?!
July 7, 2012

Pumpkin likes for us to make up bedtime stories for her at night, rather than reading books. Tonight I told her a story about fireflies and stars and faeries. When that was over, she promptly requested “a rattlesnake story”. Only my daughter.
July 7, 2012

Pumpkin declared that we should rename her sister to “Bag-yag-go”. She’s starting to make names up…look out, J.K. Rowling.
July 10, 2012

An hour ago, daddy busted out the Hogwarts LEGOS and let Pumpkin know that when he said it was time to stop, she had to be a good girl and go to bed. Lots of eager, adorable promises and “okay daddy”s followed.
Just now, a banshee-toddler “Noooooooo!” heard through the wall of her room.
Haha. I guess it’s cleanup time.
July 12, 2012

I got a fall shirt for Pumpkin at Old Navy today on the clearance rack, for 21 cents. I think that’s a new record for me.
July 16, 2012

We’re getting ready for the pool, and Pumpkin is reminiscing with pool toys about last summer. I asked her, “remember mommy’s big fat tummy at the pool last year?” (I was hugely pregnant with Peanut) …she responded very dryly, “you have fat tummy NOW, mom.”
July 19, 2012

My big girl is so very sweet. Pea was screaming and carrying on while I suctioned her extremely snotty nose. Pumpkin was looking on, saying in a very tiny, reassuring voice, “I’m right here…” to her. Melt! Then she gave Peanut her Super Grover doll when the ordeal was over. Calmed her right down. Love my girls.
July 29, 2012

Swimming in grandma and grandpa’s back yard. Pumpkin stands up and asks me very matter-of-factly, “mommy, you take my diaper off, so I can poopoo in the grass?” I did, she didn’t.
August 8, 2012

Peanut up since 5:00…tried for almost an hour to get her back to sleep. Finally gave in and got up, made coffee (bless you mom or dad for prepping the pot last night). Sit down to rock and nurse (her on yours truly, me on my glorious coffee)… And she’s asleep within minutes. The little turd had the audacity to giggle in her sleep as she was nursing. This child is an adorable little tyrant.
August 14, 2012

I feel sad that I seem to get very little quality time with my eldest right now. Most of the time I’m either protecting Peanut from one of her outbursts, or diffusing a tantrum. Is this what the threes are all about, then?
August 24, 2012

Overheard…
Keith: “Pumpkin, who is the boss in this house?”
Pumpkin, without hesitation, “Uh, not you.”
August 25, 2012

Pumpkin said she was a “fox fairy knight”…totally her idea to put on fairy wings while weilding a sword. She’s an imaginative little thing.
August 26, 2012

Today I’m home with a feverish Peanut. In her words, “I don’t want to make my friends sick.” Poor darling.
August 28, 2012

I need some help decoding toddlerspeak. Since Pumpkin was about two years old, she has referred to bubbles (in the tub, while washing her hands, in drinks, etc) as what sounds like “crackbubbles”. I have been trying to crack the code (pun intended) of what she means or what she is trying to say, but I’m still at a total loss. She said it tonight for the first time in a long time.
September 10, 2012

The Captain, pretending to see animals in the clouds with Liv: “I see a bear!”
Pumpkin, matter-of-factly: “Actually, it’s a buffalo.”
September 15, 2012

I spent most of the day cleaning and doing laundry, so I tried getting some quality cuddle time in with Pumpkin after Peanut went to sleep. I’m laying there next to her in our bed while she watches some Busytown mysteries thing, and after about five minutes, she says quietly, “I don’t like you being here.” Sheesh!
September 17, 2012

I think we have a future medical professional on our hands here…she loves going to the doctor, even if she’s just tagging along on one of Peanut’s appointments. She soaks up every detail. 39 inches tall and 34 pounds! Wow!
September 26, 2012

Had Pumpkin’s birthday party today…little boo is feeling so miserable. She fell asleep in bed with me around 5:30, and Peanut just went down at 6:20. Love that The Captain and I are getting an early Saturday evening, hate that they are feeling so wimpy. (Also anticipating a loooong night ahead or an early morning…wish us luck!)
September 29, 2012

“I wants another sister. You get one in your belly right now?”
October 23, 2012

Pumpkin was playing alone and I heard her muttering something to herself. She was reciting the entire Pledge of Allegiance. I think it is really neat how much she is learning at daycare, but it almost makes me sad that I’m not there to experience it with her.
October 28, 2012

“I can hear your bump!” says Pumpkin with her head over my heart during morning cuddles.
November 3, 2012

Pumpkin is uncharacteristically cuddly this morning, and Peanut – wonder of wonders – is playing quietly on the other side of the room by herself. I am soaking this up. There isn’t much that smells better than the top of this child’s head.
November 3, 2012

When Pumpkin plays pretend, the majority of it is vocalized as song. I love this child.
November 3, 2012

Pumpkin is discovering Star Wars. She says “wee-awk” instead of ewok.
November 11, 2012

On the way to the Carolina Renaissance Festival…gorgeous day! The Captain came into the bedroom wearing his kilt, and Pumpkin exclaimed, “daddy is a princess too!”
November 17, 2012

Peanut went to daycare today while Pumpkin stayed home and convalesced with me. When we went to pick the Pea up, the kids from Pumpkin’s classroom were so happy to see her after three days of absence that they literally lined up to give her hugs. Cutest thing I’ve ever seen.
December 6, 2012

Sickmageddon 2012: we’ve reached the phase where Pumpkin feels so awful that she just cries and whines constantly. She’s been carrying on for about 10 minutes now because she accidentally decapitated her crocodile sticker.
December 11, 2012

So much more terrifying than the “Terrible Threes” – I think Pumpkin has finally figured out that it is VERY difficult for mommy to deny her anything when she is polite and sweet.

2013

Jump to 2009 | Jump to 2010 | Jump to 2011 | Jump to 2012

I was dressing my brilliant three-year old this morning and The Captain walked in and said, “Ohayo, Pumpkin-chan!” and she proudly responded, “That’s Japanese!” She surprises me every single day.
January 9, 2013

I’m pretty sure Pumpkin is a future medical professional. She loves going to the doctor, and one of her favorite things to play with is the masks we brought home last time we were there. 🙂
January 16, 2013

Where and how do I even begin teaching Pumpkin to read? She’s starting to show some frustration when she sees words or text and doesn’t know what they say.
January 27, 2013

Pumpkin is now going on hour 12 of sleep. That child knows how to do it. Those of you with little babes, despairing that you’ll never sleep again…you will! It took Olivia almost three years, but she used to be a pretty tough cookie. One of the reasons I think baby boy will be our last…I want to start sleeping again!
February 13, 2013

Pumpkin: “Mama, what’s my middle name?”
Me: “Kathryn, after Grandma Katie.”
Pumpkin, cheerily: “Grandma Katie catched up with Grandpa John!”
Is she really only three?
February 13, 2013

I just got my first “I don’t wanna be your daughter any more. I’m going to Nana and Papa’s house” from the Imperial Princess Pumpkin. All because I wouldn’t help her clean up her groceries before she got out her Lala Loopsies.
February 20, 2013

I just had the “You can say ‘no’ if someone tries to touch you” conversation with Pumpkin, and now for the last 10 minutes when I put my hand on her leg or foot (we’re cuddling in front of the fire in the recliner) she says, “no mama! Don’t touch me.” Ha.
February 20, 2013

Pumpkin is watching Wreck It Ralph with a Hello Kitty umbrella over her head and a pacifier in her mouth. It is the most absurd thing I’ve seen all week. Child hasn’t been interested in pacis since she was a few months old.
